I directed the music video for Boy & Bear’s Southern Sun in my hometown of Queenstown, Aotearoa—where the southern light and mountains have always inspired my image-making. We choppered the entire crew to a breathtaking mountaintop location for the final scene. After setting up, we realised the playback equipment had been left at the base. In true Kiwi spirit, we improvised—the drummer kept the track playing in his headphones to maintain sync while the rest of the band performed live for the crew and cameras. Sitting on the edge of the mountain, hearing Southern Sun performed unplugged against the South Island’s raw beauty, was an extraordinary moment I’ll remember for a very long time.
